Abductive reasoning in cognitive neuroscience: weak and strong reverse inference

چکیده

Reverse inference is a crucial inferential strategy used in cognitive neuroscience to derive conclusions about the engagement of processes from patterns brain activation. While widely employed experimental studies, it now viewed with increasing scepticism within community. One problem reverse that logically invalid, being an instance abduction Peirce’s sense. In this paper, we offer first systematic analysis as form abductive reasoning and highlight some relevant implications for current debate. We start by formalising important distinction has been entirely neglected literature, namely between weak (strategic) strong (justificatory) inference. Then, rely on case studies recent neuroscientific research systematically discuss role limits both inference; particular, exploration discovery neuroscience.

Two Kinds of Reverse Inference in Cognitive Neuroscience

This essay examines the prospects and limits of ‘reverse inferring’ cognitive processes from neural data, a technique commonly used in cognitive neuroscience for discriminating between competing psychological hypotheses. Specifically, we distinguish between two main types of reverse inference. The first kind of inference moves from the locations of neural activation to the underlying cognitive ...

Cognitive Neuroscience of Causal Reasoning

The era of functional neuroimaging promised to shed light on dark corners of the brain’s inner workings, breathing new life into subfields of psychology beset by controversy. Although revelations from neuroscience provide the foundation for current views on many aspects of human cognition, there continue to be areas of study in which a mismatch between the questions asked by psychologists and n...

Cognitive Neuroscience of Deductive Reasoning

It is 4pm and I hear the school bus pull up to the house. Soon there is the taunting of a 13-year-old boy followed by the exaggerated screams of an 8-year-old girl. My kids are home from school. Exasperated, I say to my son, " If you want dinner tonight, you better stop tormenting your sister. " Given he doesn't want to go to bed hungry, he needs to draw the correct logical inference. Sure enou...

Robust Textual Inference Via Learning and Abductive Reasoning

We present a system for textual inference (the task of inferring whether a sentence follows from another text) that uses learning and a logical-formula semantic representation of the text. More precisely, our system begins by parsing and then transforming sentences into a logical formula-like representation similar to the one used by (Harabagiu et al., 2000). An abductive theorem prover then tr...

Brain imaging and cognitive neuroscience. Toward strong inference in attributing function to structure.

Cognitive neuroscience has emerged from the neurosciences and cognitive psychology as a scientific discipline that aims at the determination of "how brain function gives rise to mental activity" (S. M. Kosslyn & L. M. Shin, 1992, p. 146). While research in cognitive neuroscience combines many levels of neuroscientific and psychological analyses, modern imaging techniques that monitor brain acti...
